Top of the world: Jodie Williamssurges ahead of her rivals to storm to victory in the 100 metres IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships final in Canada

England's new junior sprint queen Jodie Williams clinched gold on Wednesday night in the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, with a sizzling 100m run in just 11.40sec.

The 16-year-old extended her winning streak to a remarkable 149 races since she began running five years ago.

Williams had cruised into the final by winning her semi in 11.59 - the fastest time recorded in the three heats and was thrilled to taste gold in the final.

Just champion: Williams celebrates her stunning 11.40 sec triumph

She said: 'I knew it was going be a close race and I wasn't quite sure I could come out and perform again, so it's obviously a huge relief and the pressure has lifted a bit.
'I thought that if I got off to a good start I'd be in with a good chance and that's just what I did'

Last night's gold justified her decision to concentrate on the age group event rather than try to run in next week's European Championships in Barcelona, even though her times could win her medals among the seniors.

'I know the day I get beaten will come eventually, but my winning streak has given me great confidence coming here and getting a medal is brilliant,' added WIlliams.

'This is another step up for me. The next step is the World Seniors so this is a stepping stone but it means a lot, it's a great achievement.'

All gold: Yet to taste defeat, sprint sensation Williams raises her gold medal

World champion Allyson Felix backed that plan, saying: 'My one piece of advice for her is to enjoy what is a really special time in your career. Take it slowly and learn a lot.'

The schoolgirl from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire will try for a sprint double in the 200m. [endtext]

Caught on camera, the horrifying moment an two-ton elephant charged and nearly killed his terrified keeper

Deadly: A CCTV image shows Louie the elephant charging his trainer, Don Redfox, who is already injured on the ground. Mr Redfox barely escaped with his life

This is the terrifying moment an elephant charged its keeper.

Security video shows the trainer, Don Redfox, desperately trying to protect himself as Louie the elephant - who weighs two tons - pinned him in a corner, his tusks narrowly missing the man's head and chest.

The elephant then backs away as Mr Redfox stumbles out.

He has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries since the attack three weeks ago at an Ohio zoo.

Doctors have upgraded his condition and expect him to recover from two punctured lungs and several fractured ribs.

Anne Baker, the zoo's director, said it's not clear why Louie, turned on the keeper.

The elephant and Mr Redfox had been together nearly every day since the animal's birth seven years ago.

It looks as if Louie was startled and then started play-fighting, as elephants do in the wild, Ms Baker said.

Mr Redfox makes it a habit to talk to the animals before he approaches so he doesn't surprise them, Ms Baker said.

She thinks he didn't do it this time because he didn't know Louie was around the corner when he walked into the enclosure carrying a bag of carrots.

'Neither expected the other to be there,' Ms Baker said.

Escape: A wounded Mr Redfox stumbles towards safety as Louie suddenly backs off

They both backed away. Louie flared his ears and moved toward the keeper, pushing toward Mr Redfox before the keeper stepped safely behind a gate and closed it.

But then Mr Redfox returned and tried to move the elephant away with a pole with a hook on the end. That's when the elephant charged, pinning him in the corner and knocking him to his knees.

Louie backed up, dropped to his knees, and then charged again at Mr Redfox, who curled up and tried to shield himself.

After that, the elephant backed away again and Mr Redfox stumbled to safety.
Ms Baker said the elephant could have killed Redfox at any time.

Since he did not, she and another elephant expert who reviewed the video think that Louie was play-fighting.

'The problem is Louie weighs over 4,000 pounds,' she said - about two tons.

Zoo officials have not been able to talk with Mr Redfox, who faces a long recovery, according to his doctors.

Mr Redfox and his family initially fought the video's release - but as the incident made its way into the media, they changed their minds, wanting to show that the animal wasn't mistreated.

The family said it continues to believe that 'releasing the security tape does nothing more than provide an opportunity to sensationalize a tragic accident'.

The cow wash: How an automatic brushing machine can improve milk production

Udderly amazing: A cow closes its eyes and enjoys the brushing sensation created by the new machine

Looking your best can sometimes be hard work. But for this cow, it would appear that having a brush-up is one of life's pleasures.

The animal is enjoying a spell in the cow wash, which, according to its designers DeLaval, is welcome news for farmers as well.

The cow wash boosts milk production by improving the animal's blood circulation and stopping the spread of disease, says the company.

The company has already sold 30,000 cow washes in its native Sweden, and is now bringing the product to the UK.

A spokesman said the cows enjoy the sensation of being brushed and it can boost milk production by 3.5per cent.

He said: 'The swinging cow brush is a self-grooming device that keeps cows happier, healthier and more productive.

'The brush starts to rotate on contact at an animal-friendly speed. It swings freely in all directions, smoothly up, over and alongside the cow.

Moo-ving past: A cow walks forward as the machine rotates, not only cleaning the animal but improving its health as well by improving blood circulation

'The bristles have the right length and hardness to stimulate the blood circulation whilst helping the cow to keep clean and calm.

'It is very popular among dairy farmers. Cows using the swinging cow brush are cleaner, calmer and therefore more balanced.'

A study conducted by scientists in the USA found the brush resulted in better animal health due to an increase in blood circulation.

It also concluded that cows using the machine were 34 per cent less likely to suffer from clinical mastitis - a condition which results in milk abnormalities.

The research team also reported increased milk production of up 3.5 per cent for cows in a pen using the swinging cow brush.

Bag lady: Rachel Bilson gamely lugged two huge bags herself in Los Angeles yesterday but friends pitched in to help carry the rest

What's a girl to do after her engagement is called off? Go shopping of course!
The OC star, 28, indulged in a blow-out retail therapy session with some pals in Los Angeles yesterday.

Loaded down with bags, the actress roped in her friends to lug the rest of her purchases as the group walked around the downtown fashion district.

Moneybags: Rachel digs into her Chanel purse during her extensive shopping trip

Known for her snappy sense of style, Rachel teamed a pair of distressed cut-offs with a cap-sleeved cardigan and bright pink pom-pom-covered sandals.

Rachel's faced some serious heartache in the past month, with her engagement to Star Wards Episode III actor Hayden Christensen, 29, put on hold.

In June, the actress showed her ringless finger to Us Weekly on the red carpet in Hollywood. When asked how wedding plans were going, she said, 'No, no plans' and pointed to her bare hand. 'No nothing.'

A source said the couple were 'taking a break'.

Rachel and Hayden, who co-starred in 2008 action film Jumper are reportedly 'taking about a month off' before reviewing the situation.

The actress previously dated her co-star on The OC, Adam Brody for three years until 2006.

A long-time fashionista, it's not surprising Rachel hit the fashion district. In 2008 she launched her own fashion line through DKNY called Edie Rose. Most of her own fashion collection was lost when he house was burgled in 2009.

Perhaps she's still re-stocking her wardrobe now!

You what? Tom Cruise film Vanilla Sky has been voted as the most confusing movie of all time. He starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz

If you emerged from the cinema after watching Vanilla Sky pretending you understood, you can finally own up.

Film enthusiasts have voted the 2001 Tom Cruise film the most confusing of all time.

Sixteen per cent named Cameron Crowe’s re-make of the Spanish film Open Your Eyes, which features disorientating dream sequences, pushing car-crash drama Mulholland Drive into second place.

And if you understood the twists and turns of Donnie Darko, complete with sleepwalking, time-travel and premonitions, here’s a reason to feel pleased with yourself.

It was voted third in the list of baffling cinema experiences, chosen by more than one in ten.

You may be surprised to find the mind-bending Matrix Revolutions only in fourth.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, starring Kate Winslet, and two of Stanley Kubrick’s films, 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange also made the list.

Helen Cowley, of Lovefilm rental, which conducted the survey, said: ‘It’s clear dreaming is the biggest cause of confusion for viewers.

‘Switching from reality to dream sequences pulls the wool over our eyes.’

Locked-up Lindsay Lohan gets a visit from her mother and sister

Family visit: Dina and Ali Lohan visit the Lynwood jail in California today

Lindsay Lohan's closest family members today visited the Lynwood jail where the Mean Girls actress is being held behind bars.

Her mother Dina, 47, and sister Ali, 16, stayed for just over an hour, but it's unclear if they were actually able to see the actress, who is spending 23 hours a day in her cell.

Visitation is normally reserved for weekends, although prison wardens at the California women's prison can make exceptions.

The 24-year-old is said to have requested her family take her a copy of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea to help keep her occupied.

Emotional: It's unclear if the pair got to see Lindsay as visitation is usually reserved for weekends

She is two days into an what was ordered to be a 90-jail term for violating her probation, however she is expected to serve just 14 days.

The jail went into lockdown mode for an hour on Tuesday when the actress arrived, with prisoners confined to their cells. She was strip-searched and 'cavity searched' before changing into an orange prison jumpsuit.

Mug shot: This picture was taken just moments before she was put behind bars

She then posed for her prison mugshot, appearing to pout and possibly smirk for the camera. Her booking sheet at the prison says she weighed 8st 6lb and is 5ft 6in tall. It also says she has blonde hair but, strangely, black eyes.

After having a photo taken, she was led to her 12ft x 8ft cell, which is next to Alexis Neiers, who was convicted as part of the Bling Ring burglaries and is serving time for burglary at Orlando Bloom's house.

They are being housed in the 2,200-bed facility's special needs unit, where Lohan will live in isolation for her own safety and be confined to her cell 23 hours a day.

The actress spent about 84 minutes there in 2007 for a drunken driving offence, reduced from her already trimmed day-long sentence because of the overpopulation issue.

Behind bars: Lindsay is expected to serve just 14 of her 90-day jail sentence

Stylish pair: Tommy Hilfiger and wife Dee Ocleppo took in the sights as they cruised around St Tropez, France

Powerhouse American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife Dee Ocleppo looked oh so chic as they took a cruise around St Tropez yesterday.

The 59-year-old father of six was dressed in a classic blue and white stripped shirt, white shorts and sunglasses, soaked up the sights from his luxury yacht.

Dee opted for a simple yet stylish look in a strapless white cotton sundress, aviators and wedge heels.

And love was in the sea air as the pair shared a kiss while relaxing on the back deck of the boat.

The romantic couple had lunch at the celebrity haunt Club 55 before returning to the boat, moored in arguably one of Europe's most famous marinas.

Hilfiger married Ocleppo, an ex professional tennis player, in December 2008 and the pair have a son together, Sebastian Thomas Hilfiger, who was born in August last year.

He had previously been married for 20 years and had five children with his ex wife, Susie Hilfiger.

They divorced in 2000.
Hilfiger then, largely due to declining sales, sold his clothing empire in 2006 for a reported $1.6 billion to a private investment company called Apax Partners.

Puffing Billie: Toddler gets smoke in his face as actress mum enjoys a roll-up

By Beth Hale

Mummy's such a drag: The fumes from Miss Piper's roll-up cigarette leave young Winston's blond head enveloped in smoke

With her young son only inches away, Billie Piper takes a deep drag on her roll-up and blows smoke in his face.

The 27-year-old actress made great play of the fact that she gave up cigarettes while pregnant with Winston, now aged 21 months.

But she appeared to be making up for lost time during a visit to a pub garden with her actor husband Laurence Fox and another couple.

Initially, either Fox or his wife would take turns looking after Winston while the other moved away to puff on a roll-up.

But as the afternoon progressed they became more relaxed and eventually, as the picture shows, made no effort to distance the toddler from the tobacco cloud.

Earlier this year former pop singer Miss Piper, who went on to star in Doctor Who and Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, admitted that her greatest vices were 'roll-up cigarettes and red wine'.

She added: 'I didn't smoke through my pregnancy, and I thought I did really well not to for nine months.

Bad habits: Billie, who gave up cigarettes when she was pregnant, pictured enjoying a roll-up with husband Laurence Fox

'When Winston was born, I decided I didn't want to smoke cigarettes any more, as they are full of chemicals, so I turned to roll-ups instead. I do love them.'

The damaging effects of passive smoking are well documented.

In March, a report from the Royal College of Physicians revealed that tens of thousands of children in the UK every year develop asthma, chest infections and ear problems because they are exposed to smoke from their parents' cigarettes.

This led to a call for a ban on smoking in cars, and for the ban on smoking in enclosed spaces to be extended to parks, playgrounds and other areas where children congregate.

The actress, who has admitted roll-up cigarettes are her 'greatest vice', pictured with Laurence and Winston

Martin Dockrell, director of research for the charity Action on Smoking and Health, said: 'There are two good reasons not to smoke in front of children.

'First, especially in enclosed areas second-hand smoke seriously damages a child's health and even risks causing a cot death.

'The second reason is that the more a child sees adults around them smoking the more likely they are to try smoking themselves as they get older.

'In fact only one in five adults smokes but children often overestimate this and the more they do, the more they are likely to smoke themselves.'

Britain's got sued: Singer wants £2.5m from Cowell after 'humiliation' before 20m

Tribunal: Emma Amelia Pearl Czikai claims she was left humiliated after judges on Britain's got Talent criticised her performance

A Britain's Got Talent contestant is suing Simon Cowell for £2.5million, claiming she was 'humiliated and degraded' on the hit ITV show.

Emma Amelia Pearl Czikai, 54, says she was mocked by judges Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan when they buzzed her off saying she could not sing.

Cowell said she had a 'horrible singing voice' while Miss Holden added: 'I just can't see how she can't see that she can't sing.'

The former nurse claims she was ridiculed in front of 20million viewers and the trio took away her 'self respect and dignity' in order to boost the programme's ratings and profit.

Miss Czikai is attempting to have her claims heard at an employment tribunal but is being fought by BGT lawyers.

She says her performance, screened in May last year, suffered as a result of numerous medical complaints which left her with constant pain and meant she could not sing in noisy raucous environments.

On the show, a clip of which was subsequently posted on YouTube, a smirking Cowell asked Miss Czikai if she thought she had the talent to win.

Dressed in an intricately embroidered red ball gown, she replied: 'Oh Simon, I'm wonderful. You will go home and think I'm so glad that I met that woman.'

But after only a few notes of Westlife's power ballad You Raise Me Up, Morgan was the first judge to buzz her off, quickly followed by the other two.

Against a backdrop of loud booing, Cowell then said: 'Emma, this is a beautiful song when you're not singing it and I think I speak on behalf of everyone that you have a horrible singing voice.'

When Miss Czikai tried to protest that the backing track was too loud and she wasn't used to the microphone, he snapped: 'It's not loud enough. Emma, Emma, reality check here. It's not the music, it's not the microphone, it's you.'

Miss Czikai also lifted the lid on the way contestants were treated on the show and said it was like 'modern day slavery'.

Not impressed: Judge Simon Cowell looks uninterested by the contestant's display and has had to employ a QC to fight employment tribunal claims as a result

She said contestants were routinely humiliated, bullied into saying things they didn't mean and goaded to become angry and frustrated to make good television.
Meanwhile she saw 'servants' walking through with platters of lobster, seafood and caviar which she was told was for Miss Holden, Morgan and Cowell.

Yesterday at an employment tribunal hearing Miss Czikai, claimed she was the victim of disability discrimination because the talent show had not made adjustments for her such as lowering the music and microphone levels.

Miss Czikai, who is representing herself, also claimed she had suffered 'ongoing harassment' because a later improved performance on spin-off show Britain's Got More Talent was not linked to the original clip on YouTube to prove she could sing.

The pre-tribunal review, which will decide if a full hearing will go ahead, was told that Miss Czikai was seeking £300,000 for her injured feelings, compensation of £1million and loss of earnings of £1.25million - although she said if she were awarded any money it would go to charity.

She told the hearing in central London yesterday: 'I haven't got a horrible singing voice when I sing in a fair environment that meets the needs of my particular disabilities as I proved when I performed live on Britian's Got More Talent.

Attack: Miss Czikai claims her performance was impeded by medical conditions - and that she can actually sing

'Britain's Got Talent have sought to accrue profit to themselves through exploitation of a film clip that they know perpetrates a lie that I cannot sing.'

Breaking down in tears she added: 'This programme makes a select number of rich people very very rich on the backs of the ordinary man and woman in the street through exploitation, humiliation, degradation and a re-emergence of modern-day barbarism with all its inherent cruelty.'

Thomas Linden QC, representing Cowell's TV company Simco, opposed Miss Czikai's right to have a full hearing on the basis that BGT was not an employer and that the staff had no prior knowledge of her disabilities. He also questioned whether posting a clip on the web constituted on-going harassment.

Miss Czikai suffers from fibromyalgia, which is characterised by widespread pain and fatigue, but is not recognised by some doctors. The hearing continues.

Unimpressed: Simon Cowell reacts to Miss Czikai's performance which took place in May last year

It's a no from them: All three judges buzzed the contestant out before she had completed her song

TOUR DE FRANCE 2010: Lance Armstrong bows out with a shot at glory as Alberto Contador retains advantage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0ljzCVNCB8endofvid

By Ivan Speck in Pau

Downhill from here: Armstrong (right) and Jose Ivan Gutierrez speed down Peyresourde pass

Lance Armstrong paid a farewell tribute to the mountains which have bathed him in adulation during a glorious Tour de France career that now has just four more days to run.

The seven-times victor did not win the 125-mile slog over four Pyreneean summits to Pau, yet his place at the front of a dutiful procession to honour the Tour’s history was sufficient homage.

Armstrong’s final Tour is coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the first inclusion of the Pyrenees

on a Tour route. As a member of the breakaway group which crested the formidable Col du Tourmalet and the Col d’Aubisque ahead of the peloton, the 38-year-old evoked memories of his own grandeur.

If he stopped short of waving at the misty-eyed spectators lining the fearsome climbs, there was no denying the pride of a retiring champion.

Armstrong said: ‘When you’re out there in the break, the fans can get close to you, they can talk to you and you can talk back to them. This whole Tour they have been very supportive of me.

‘They don’t have to come to the Tour. They don’t have to fly in from all over the world and stand on a hot roadside, but they do and I appreciate it.

‘I’m not the best guy in the race this year, but I still have the spirit of a fighter. I focused on the stage, got myself up in the moves but it didn’t work. I just wasn’t fast enough in the end.’

The man to catch: Spaniard Contador is still in possession of the yellow jersey

After a Tour in which he punctured on the cobbles of northern France and suffered three crashes in a day in the Alps, Armstrong could not match the pure straightline speed of Pierrick Fedrigo in the final sprint to the line in Pau. It didn’t matter.

His tribute had been delivered.

When the Pyrenees were first ridden in 1910 over the same four climbs on a stage measuring over 200 miles, the riders set out at three o’clock in the morning. The final one completed the course 22 hours later and the previous year’s Tour winner Octave Lapize famously yelled: ‘Assassins!’ at the race organisers as he crossed the final summit.

The roads are better paved nowadays, the bikes incomparably superior and the team support so all-encompassing that it is almost ludicrous to recall that in those early days riders had to repair their own bikes en route.

Still, though, the Pyrenees can sap a man’s will and when the 172 riders remaining from an original field of 198 reconvene for the final mountain stage after the rest day, the battle will be as much about nerve as peddling power.

French flyer: Fedrigo (left) celebrates on the finish line as he wins stage 16 ahead of Casar (2nd right)

Do not fall for the false truce here between race leader Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck. Contador apologised for his opportunistic actions in attacking when his rival dropped a chain on Monday, yet the 39-second swing that resulted on the Port de Bales and the yellow jersey which came with it remain his. It is why the Spaniard was whistled again as he mounted the podium.

Schleck gave him a conciliatory hug after the finish in Pau, yet the gesture of goodwill extends no further than the start line of Thursday's pivotal climb back up the Col du Tourmalet.

Schleck said: ‘We talked today. What happened yesterday wasn’t something you would really like to see, but things happen in racing sometimes. We are good now.

‘It’s finished and on Thursday you’ll see a good war between Alberto and I. An eight-second gap is nothing in the third week of the Tour. I think that whoever gets to the top of the Tourmalet first will win the Tour.’

Along way from East High: Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron turned out for the LA premiere of his new film Charlie St. Cloud last night

While the pair have been going strong since 2005, Efron insists there will be no wedding bells any time soon.

Five years after falling in love on the set of Disney hit High School Musical, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens made a very grown-up couple on the red carpet last night.

The affectionate pair were out in force for the Hollywood premiere of the 22-year-old actor's latest big screen offering, Charlie St. Cloud.

Vanessa, 21, who was dressed in a stylish oyster-coloured silk frock, played the supportive partner and at one point affectionately rested her head on his shoulder.

They way they were: The High School Musical stars fell in love on set in 2005

Zac told US entertainment show Extra: "No, I'm not gonna get married for a while.
'I think I've always said I'm not gonna get married 'til I'm 30, I'm gonna wait.

He added: 'I wouldn't want that kind of commitment or pressure at this point.'

Efron admits to being a bit nervous about his role in the new movie Charlie St. Cloud.

He plays a teenager who has to chose between keeping a promise he made to his brother, who died in a car accident, or trying to get the girl he loves.

The teen heartthrob also admits that Vanessa has got him into doing yoga as a way to work out.

He added: 'She's into yoga and all the girly ways you can work out.

'She's getting me into that stuff, too.'

Charlie St. Cloud hits cinemas in the US on July 30.

Kate Garraway reveals GMTV staff were 'shocked' at gaunt appearance of Ulrika Jonsson

By Georgina Littlejohn

Concerned: GMTV presenter Kate Garraway, pictured leaving work today, said she and staff members were worried about Ulrika's Jonsson, seen arriving at the show last Tuesday

GMTV presenter Kate Garraway has admitted that staff were left 'worried' about Ulrika Jonsson's appearance when she appeared on the programme.

Ulrika, 42, left viewers and crew stunned with her skinny frame which showed off her bony chest when she was a guest on the ITV breakfast show last week.

And Kate, 43, said everyone was shocked at how much weight she had lost - although the Swede refused to talk about it on the show.

Writing in her column for new! magazine, she said: 'Ulrika Jonsson came on GMTV last week to talk about the new series of Shooting Stars.

'The show looks hilarious and Ulrika is clearly still up for a joke as ever.

'However, everyone was very worried about how thin she looked. She’s always been lean, but viewers were shocked at how much weight she’s lost.

'I asked her before we went on air if she was OK and she said she didn’t want to
talk about it on camera, which is her prerogative.

'She said that her life is really happy but busy at the moment, not least running about after her four children.

Gaunt: Ulrika showed off a bony chest and thin face when she appeared on GMTV on July 13

'I do hope it’s nothing more serious and that all she needs is her husband Brian Monet to make her a few meals and feed her up with a bit of stodge!'
Ulrika returned to the show where she where she first made her name as a weathergirl in 1989, and looked super skinny in a low-cut grey top and cardigan as she talked to Garraway and her co-host Andrew Castle.

When they asked her about family life with her husband, U.S. advertising executive Brian Monet who she married in 2008, Ulrika said: 'Yes it’s good, it’s very, very busy as you might imagine with four children and ranging in ages from sort of nearly 16 down to two.'

And questioned if she was going to stick with him, she added: 'Oh yes. Well I have to, he’s watching... He’s a keeper, as he said to me once. But no, he’s great.'

Breakfast banter: Ulrika shares a joke and a chat with Garraway and her GMTV co-host Andrew Castle

Monet is Ulrika's third husband after she first married cameraman John Turnbull in 1990 and then Lance Gerrard-Wright in 2003.

Inmates cheered and shouted 'We love you' as Lindsay Lohan arrived to serve her prison sentence today.

And if that didn't give her a lift as she put on her regulation orange prison jumpsuit and posed for her prison picture, then the revelation this afternoon that she will serve just 14 days of her 90-day jail term most certainly will.

The actress, 24, arrived in tears as she was driven into a private side entrance at the bleak Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, just south of downtown Los Angeles.

Tiffany Hawes, who was being released after serving 35 days of a 180 day sentence for driving on a suspended licence, said: 'Lindsay was crying when she came in. She was handcuffed but seemed calm. We all started saying "God bless you Lindsay" and saying "Hi" to her and then she smiled at us.'

Brenda Armstrong, 50, also being released after serving 20 days of a 120-day sentence, said: 'We all cheered when we saw her and said we loved her.'

Jen Devey, 21, also being released after served 45 days, said: 'We saw her. She was nice and smiled but she'd definitely been crying. She's human, just like all of us , but she happens to be a celebrity with lots of money. But she's still a person and she f***** up,'

The jail went into lockdown mode for an hour when the actress arrived, with prisoners confined to their cells. She was strip-searched and 'cavity searched' before changing into an orange prison jumpsuit.

She then posed for her prison mugshot, appearing to pout and possibly smirk for the camera. Her booking sheet at the prison says she weighed 8st 6lb and is 5ft 6in tall. It also says she has blonde hair but, strangely, says she has black eyes.

After having a photo taken, she was led to her cell, which is next to Alexis Neiers, who convicted as part of the Bling Ring burglaries and is serving time for burglary at Orlando Bloom's house.

They are being housed in the 2,200-bed facility's special needs unit, where Lohan will live in isolation for her own safety and be confined to her cell 23 hours a day.

The actress spent about 84 minutes there in 2007 for a drunken driving offense, reduced from her already trimmed day-long sentence because of the overpopulation issue.

Tonight a sheriff's deputy confirmed that she'll be eating spaghetti with meat sauce and broccoli.

But the good news for her is that a spokesman for the Los Angeles Sheriff's department said she would only serve 14 days at the jail if she behaved herself.

Glittering welcome: Lindsay Lohan is showered with golden confetti by a fan as she walks into the courthouse

Lohan had arrived at jail after a court appearance that lasted under 10 minutes. .

She was due there at 8.30am but didn't arrive until 8.37am after getting stuck in the Los Angeles traffic. As she rushed inside from her black SUV with her mother Dina, an onlooker threw gold confetti over the actress.

Lohan was immaculately turned out with her hair bleached platinum blonde and wearing designer skinny-legging style jeans, a crop top and peep-toe slouchy boots.

Observers in court were left to wonder if she'd had a new trout pout for the occasion. The actress certainly spent a lot of time licking her lips and playing with her mouth.

Lohan arrived inside the courtroom at 8.40am and appeared close to tears as she sat and listened as Judge Marsha Revel ordered her to jail.

But there were none of the tears that were witnessed two weeks ago as the Superior Court judge handed down the 90-day jail term and blasted her for not taking her probation in two drink-driving cases seriously.

Lohan was handcuffed out of the view of the cameras just eight minutes after entering the court room.

The actress removed her black jacket revealing a grey sleeveless top with an open diamond in the back and no bra.

She calmly put her hands behind her back and was cuffed by a female sheriff's deputy and then led out through judges' chambers.

Her father Michael was sitting in the centre section of the court and yelled 'We love you
Lindsay'. Lohan did not turn around, did not look back and completely ignored her father.

Her mother Dina and sister Ali sat on the far right hand side of the courtroom and kept blank faces. They did not speak to anyone afterwards.

Lohan was put in a police car immediately and driven to jail.

Thanks to jail overcrowding and a state program that credits inmates for good behavior, non-violent female misdemeanor offenders such as Lohan typically serve only about 25 per cent of their sentences

But according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore Lohan will actually only serve 14 days.

'She is scheduled to be released on either August 1 or 2 for overcrowding issues and good behavior,' he told People.com.

That means in theory she should be out in time for the premiere of Machete, the action-thriller opening Sept. 3 that stars Lohan as a gun obsessed socialite. But the star still has to serve 90 days in a rehab clinic.

It's hadn't been a good 24 hours for the star leading up her dramatic court appearance. Celebrity lawyer Robert Shapiro walked away from representing her, just hours before she was due to appear in court.

Shapiro, who famously represented OJ Simpson, stepped away after meeting with a judge the afternoon before Lohan's court appearance.

He had taken on her case unofficially on the condition she followed the judge's orders and reported to jail.

But Shawn Chapman Holley, who quit after the actress's sentencing, never signed the papers removing herself as lawyer of record and was at her side this morning as she arrived in court.

Holley was due to be in court as a lawyer on an attempted murder case. But she had the Cruz case delayed so she could be with Lohan at Beverly Hills Superior Court.

Lohan took to Twitter the night before her court appearance and made it clear she's still in disbelief over the sentencing.

'The only "bookings" that i'm familiar with are Disney Films, never thought that i'd be "booking" into Jail... eeeks,' she wrote.

But tonight a spoof Twitter site 'LindayInJail' poked fun at the actress with the entry: 'Isn't it funny," I can't help but think.. So many bars, but nothing to drink.'
